AEG Washing Machine

A washing machine that won’t drain properly can cause serious mess in your home or business space. This will lead to an incomplete wash cycle. This leaves you with two major issues, water on the floor and washing not done. At ARC Center, we specialize in diagnosing and repairing washing machines, ensuring they function optimally. In this article, we’ll explore the most common reasons why your washer may not be draining and how to troubleshoot these issues.

Common Causes of Drainage Problems

1. Clogged or Broken Drain Pump

The drain pump is responsible for removing water from the washing machine during the spin cycle. Over time, it can become clogged with debris such as lint, small clothing items, or even foreign objects like coins. If the pump is damaged, it won’t function properly.

Symptoms of a Clogged or Faulty Drain Pump:

  • Water remains in the drum after the cycle ends.
  • The washing machine makes a humming noise but does not drain.
  • Water drains very slowly or intermittently.
  • Error codes related to drainage appear on the control panel.

Solution:

  • Unplug the washing machine and locate the drain pump (usually found at the bottom of front-load washers).
  • Remove any debris blocking the pump filter.
  • If the pump is broken, replacement may be necessary.

2. Clogged Drain Hose

The drain hose carries wastewater from the washing machine to the household drainage system. If it’s twisted, blocked, or clogged, water cannot exit properly.

Symptoms of a Blocked Drain Hose:

  • Water backs up into the drum.
  • The washing machine tries to drain but fails.
  • You notice standing water in the hose.

Solution:

  • Check the hose for visible kinks or bends and straighten them.
  • Remove the hose and flush it with water to clear any blockages.
  • Ensure the hose is properly connected and positioned to allow free drainage.

3. Faulty Lid Switch (Top Load Washers)

In top-load washing machines, the lid switch acts as a safety feature. If it fails, the washer may not advance to the drain cycle.

Symptoms of a Faulty Lid Switch:

  • The washing machine stops mid-cycle.
  • No draining or spinning occurs after washing.
  • The lid does not make a clicking sound when closed.

Solution:

  • Open and close the lid while listening for a clicking noise.
  • If no sound is heard, test the lid switch with a multimeter.
  • Replace the lid switch if it’s defective.

4. Clogged Coin Trap or Filter

Many modern washing machines have a coin trap or drain filter that collects small debris. If it becomes clogged, it can prevent proper drainage.

Symptoms of a Clogged Coin Trap or Filter:

  • Water remains in the machine after the cycle ends.
  • The machine drains slowly.
  • A foul smell develops due to trapped debris.

Solution:

  • Locate the coin trap (typically at the bottom of the front panel).
  • Open the filter compartment and remove any buildup.
  • Clean the filter regularly to prevent future blockages.
