Air Conditioner Fault
Diagnosis Service

When your air conditioner stops performing at its best, it can disrupt your comfort, waste energy, and even risk damaging the unit. At ARC Center, we have over 10 years of experience diagnosing and repairing air conditioning systems across Cape Town and surrounding areas. Whether it’s a small residential split unit or a large commercial HVAC system, our technicians follow a systematic process to find the fault, explain the cause, and provide a lasting solution

Daikin Air Conditioner

This is the most common complaint. It usually occurs when refrigerant gas is low due to a leak, air filters are clogged, or the compressor is failing. Dirty outdoor condenser coils can also stop heat from escaping, leading to poor cooling.

How we fix it:
Our team performs a gas level check, cleans or replaces air filters, washes outdoor coils, and tests the compressor. If refrigerant is low, we find and repair the leak before topping it up to ensure optimal cooling

This issue may be caused by a refrigerant leak, a stuck reversing valve (in systems that can both heat and cool), or a thermostat that is misreading the room temperature.

How we fix it:
We test refrigerant levels, inspect the reversing valve, and recalibrate or replace faulty thermostats. Once fixed, your air conditioner should return to delivering cool air.

Blocked or dirty drain lines are the usual culprits. Over time, dust, algae, or insects clog the pipe, forcing water to overflow from the drip tray. Ice forming on coils (due to low gas or airflow issues) can also cause sudden water leaks.

How we fix it:
We flush and clear the condensate drain line, inspect the drain pan for cracks, and check for coil freeze-ups. If the unit is not properly leveled, we re-install it to ensure proper drainage

Ice on Coils or Aircon is Frozen

This occurs when airflow is restricted (dirty filters or blocked vents) or refrigerant levels are too low. In both cases, the temperature of the evaporator coil drops below freezing, causing ice to form.

How we fix it:
We turn off the unit to allow thawing, clean filters, inspect fans for proper airflow, and top up refrigerant if required.

Strange Noises from the Air Conditioner

Banging or rattling noises may mean loose panels or parts. Buzzing often points to electrical issues, while grinding could mean worn motor bearings. Ignoring these noises can lead to major mechanical failures.

How we fix it:
Our technicians inspect fans, blowers, and motors, tighten loose components, and lubricate moving parts. Electrical buzzing is investigated and repaired safely.

Bad Smells or Musty Odors

Mold and bacteria build up on damp coils, drain pans, or filters when systems are not cleaned regularly. This results in unpleasant smells and poor indoor air quality.

How we fix it:
We deep clean the evaporator coils, replace or wash filters, sanitize drain pans, and apply antibacterial treatments to prevent future odor problems.

Outdoor Unit Not Running

This usually points to an electrical fault, burnt-out capacitor, or even a failed compressor. Without the outdoor unit, the system cannot release heat, so no cooling happens indoors.

How we fix it:
We inspect electrical connections, test capacitors and relays, and ensure the compressor is running correctly. If the compressor is faulty, we recommend a cost-effective repair or replacement solution.

Thermostat or Remote Not Working

Dead batteries, misconfigured settings, or faulty sensors can cause communication issues between the thermostat and the aircon unit.

How we fix it:
We test and replace batteries, reprogram settings, and replace defective thermostats or sensors if necessary.

Portable Air Conditioner Faults and Issues

Portable Air Conditioners face unique problems such as:

  • Not Cooling: Often due to blocked exhaust hoses or dirty filters.
  • Leaking Water: Full tanks or blocked drains.
  • Shutting Off: Overheating from poor ventilation.
  • Excessive Noise: Loose fan components or uneven placement.

We service portable air conditioners too by cleaning filters, unblocking hoses, and ensuring proper ventilation for safe, efficient operation.

Why Professional Diagnosis Matters

Attempting DIY fixes without proper tools can cause more damage, void warranties, and even create safety hazards. Our team uses professional-grade leak detectors, pressure gauges, and cleaning equipment to provide a complete diagnosis and a reliable solution.
